SR’s Employment Team Secures Second Jury Trial Victory in a Month for Large Utility Company
Recently, Reginald Roberts and the Sanders Roberts Employment Trial Team secured its second jury trial victory in less than a month. Appearing before the Honorable Otis D. Wright II in the Central District of California, Sanders Roberts defended a utility giant against a former employee at one of its Southern California facilities
In this case, the former employee sued the utility for violations of Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the Dodd Frank Act, Wrongful Termination, FEHA Retaliation, CFRA Retaliation, Defamation, and Punitive Damages. The former employee sought recovery in the seven figures. “I am happy that my client handles employment matters the right way and even happier that a judge and jury agreed after all evidence was presented.,” said lead trial counsel, Reginald Roberts, Partner at Sanders Roberts LLP. “The Court and the Jury got it right.”
Upon being retained as trial counsel close to the eve of trial, the SR team obtained leave of court, which led to a dismissal of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act claim on Summary Adjudication, and a partial dismissal of the defamation claim on an Anti-SLAPP motion.
At the trial, the SR team successfully argued a nonsuit motion, which led to the dismissal of the Dodd-Frank Act, FEHA retaliation, and Punitive Damages claims. Ultimately, the jury found for SCE on the remaining CFRA retaliation and Wrongful Termination claims. The jury awarded Plaintiff $300 regarding his defamation claim, astronomically less than what the former employee and their counsel previously sought in the litigation.
