Anand has substantial experience representing companies in high-profile government
investigations and civil litigation. He has overseen internal investigations and defended companies in connection with matters initiated by the Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Trade Commission, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, State Attorneys General, the California Department of Insurance, and other agencies. He has submitted briefs before the California Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
 

Prior to joining Sanders Roberts, LLP, Anand clerked for the Honorable Vanessa Ruiz on the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary. Following his clerkships, Anand worked for a large international law firm.

 

Government Investigations/Qui Tam Litigation/Public Interest

Anand spent a year on secondment working in Bank of America’s legal department, where he advised the Bank on its $16.65 billion settlement relating to mortgage practices, the largest ever single-company settlement in U.S. history. He has authored corporate whistleblower policies, as well as a best-practices guide for conducting internal investigations for a large telecommunications company.

 

Representative matters include:

  • U.S. ex rel. Szymoniak v. American Home Mortgage Servicing, Inc. et al., Case No. 0:10-cv-01465 (D.S.C.) and U.S. ex rel. Szymoniak v. ACE Securities Corp. et al., No. 13-cv-464 (D.S.C.): Led joint defense team representing the nation’s largest banks in lawsuits brought by a “whistleblower” who appeared on 60 Minutes and was represented by the former chair of the South Carolina Democratic Party. The trial court dismissed all claims, and judgment was affirmed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit;

  • F.T.C. v. Herbalife International of America, Inc., Case No. 16-cv-05217 (C.D. Cal.):
    Advised Herbalife in connection with its $200 million consent judgment arising out of
    allegedly deceptive business practices;

  • U.S. ex rel. Chan v. PAMC, Ltd., Case No. 13-cv-4273 (C.D. Cal.): Negotiated $42 million
    settlement of Medicare fraud claims—highlighted as a “win” in the media; and

  • Los Angeles County Bar Association Independent Juvenile Defender Program v. Superior Court, Case No. B294207 (Cal. Ct. App.): Served as lead day-to-day attorney in challenge to the Juvenile Court’s blanket disqualification of the Los Angeles County Bar Association in delinquency proceedings; successfully convinced the Court of Appeal to issue a writ of mandamus directing its appointment as counsel for indigent youth.

Business Litigation

Anand has broad experience representing companies in business disputes involving contracts and alleged fraud, including matters involving real estate, insurance defense, media and entertainment, professional liability, and products liability. He also advises on employment-related issues, and has represented companies in wage and hour litigation, wrongful termination cases, and intra-corporate disputes. Anand also regularly advises senior corporate employees and other individuals in matters where their personal assets are at stake, and he has defended depositions of Chief Executive Officers.

  • Fortress SF1, LLC vs. 274 Brannan Street Owner, LLC et al., Case No. 19-cv-28259 (Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles): Represented owner of major West Coast data center in action involving rates paid by AT&T, Verizon, and other telecommunication providers;

  • Figueroa v. Guerrero et al., Case No. BC559572 (Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles): Wrote, argued, and won motion for summary adjudication, which resulted in the voiding of a grant deed and return of real property to our client;

  • Tokai International Holdings, Inc. v. Paul Hastings, LLP, Case No. BC630144 (Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles): Represented large international law firm in legal malpractice action arising out of environmental due diligence in a corporate acquisition; and

  • San Jacinto Z, LLC v. Stewart Title of California, Inc. et al., Case No. RIC 535367 (Superior Court of California, County of Riverside): Represented title insurance company in bad-faith insurance litigation arising out of a complex web of real estate transactions in California.
